Dear Brothers and Sisters, Fall has arrived in force! Between the jacket weather this past week and seeing the leaves falling, it’s definitely a new season. And with the season of the harvest, there’s a lot to celebrate at St. Thomas this week! First, our new Pastoral Associate—Sister Amanda Magdalena Davis, of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary—has arrived in town. We’re so excited to have her as part of our parish family, and I look forward to seeing her many gifts in action. She’ll be in and out a bit over the next week or two, as she gets settled, and we’ll do a formal welcome reception the weekend of October 28-29. Second, this weekend is our annual Stewardship Sunday, and I’d like to focus on celebrating the tradition of good stewardship at this parish. Thank you for all you do, and I pray that your generosity brings you as much joy as it brings to the rest of our community. This weekend’s Gospel gives a good image of how generosity works. God is generous to us, and he invites us to join him in that same largeness of spirit. And the positive cycle of open-heartedness, when everyone shares what they have, brings us to an experience of celebration—the “royal wedding feast” of today’s Gospel. I think there’s an important reason for why Scripture gives us this image: joy always wants to be shared. Just think about a time when something good happened in your life that filled you with happiness. I bet that for most of us, our first reaction was to tell a friend, maybe by picking up our phone and giving them a call, or even unexpectedly showing up on their doorstep! Joy has a way of overflowing out of us, and happiness shared is happiness doubled. So to our whole parish family, thank you for your generosity, in so many ways. Let’s resolve to experience God’s joy as a community, as we share what we have and participate in the life the Lord gives us together. As we celebrate together this Sunday as a parish family, please know of my prayers that God will fill all of us with joy, this season and always. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡El otoño ha llegado con fuerza! Entre el clima moderada de la semana pasada y las hojas cayentes, estamos en una nueva temporada. Y con la temporada de cosecha, ¡hay mucho que celebrar en Santo Tomas esta semana! Primero, nuestra nueva Asociada Pastoral, la Hermana Amanda Magdalena Davis, de las Siervas de los Corazones Traspasados de Jesús y María, ha llegado a la ciudad. Estamos muy emocionados de tenerla como parte de nuestra familia parroquial y espero ver sus muchos dones en acción. Tendremos una recepción formal de bienvenida el fin de semana del 28 y 29 de octubre. En segundo lugar, este fin de semana es nuestro Domingo de Compromiso anual y me gustaría centrarme en celebrar la tradición de corresponsabilidad en esta parroquia. Gracias por todo lo que hacen, y rezo para que su generosidad te brinde tanta alegría como al resto de nuestra comunidad. El Evangelio de este fin de semana da una buena imagen de cómo funciona la generosidad. Dios es generoso con nosotros y nos invita a unirnos a él en su grandeza de espíritu. Y el ciclo positivo de apertura de corazón, cuando todos compartimos lo que tenemos, nos lleva a una experiencia de celebración: la “fiesta de bodas real” del Evangelio de hoy. Creo que hay una razón importante por la cual las Escrituras nos dan esta imagen: el gozo siempre quiere ser compartido. Piensa en un momento cuando sucedió algo bueno en tu vida que te llenó de felicidad. Dear Brothers and Sisters, We spent some time last weekend talking about a big project that our parish has been planning: opening a parish school in 2024. This week, I’d like to put a few words in writing about it. This is an exciting moment in our parish’s life, but we need to make sure we have the support of our entire community behind it. I’ll briefly recap our reasons and our plan, then talk about some of the ways you can help make it happen. The story behind the school project is that our young families have been experiencing significant difficulties in raising their children as people of faith. The world around us has become less in line with our values in many complicated ways, and the gap between generations has also widened, with the influence of social changes, technology, migration, and economic realities. A parish school is one important way we can help make sure the faith is passed on to our young people. Our plan is simple. We are working toward opening a PreK (4-year-old) program in fall of 2024, then adding a grade level each year, up to 8th grade. By being proactive with fundraising and grants, we intend to make sure that the parish school is a realistic option for all our families. We’ll have to charge some tuition, but I won’t let finances get in the way of a family being able to send their kids to our parish school. There are two big ways that you can help us make this dream become a reality. First, if you have children at the right age (4 years or younger as of fall of 2024), I’d ask you to please let us know if you are interested in the school. Or if you have grandkids, other relatives, or friends that might be interested, please share this information with the parents. You can communicate with us at the link on our website, or you can fill out one of the interest forms in the gathering space. This will let us get some specific numbers to work with as we do our planning and fundraising. Second, I would ask for everyone’s prayers for this project. We’ve come as far as we have because the parish leadership has felt God calling us in this direction, and we will need divine aid and the saints’ intercession to make it come to fruition. Through the intercession of Mary, Help of Christians, and our patron St. Thomas, let’s commit to making sure that the Catholic faith continues to be handed on to our young people like the treasure it is. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Pasamos un tiempo el fin de semana pasado hablando sobre un gran proyecto que nuestra parroquia ha estado planeando: una escuela parroquial en 2024. Esta semana, me gustaría escribir algunas palabras al respecto. Este es un momento emocionante en la vida de nuestra parroquia, pero debemos asegurarnos de tener el apoyo de toda nuestra comunidad. Recapitularé brevemente nuestras razones y nuestro plan, luego hablaré sobre algunas de las formas en que tu puedes ayudar a que esto suceda. La historia detrás de la escuela es que nuestras familias han estado experimentando dificultades para criar a sus hijos como personas de fe. Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we begin our Stewardship Month, we have the joy over the next couple weeks of making a few big announcements. This week, I’d like to focus on one of those in particular: a new member of our parish staff. Allow me to introduce Sister Amanda Magdalena Davis, of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary. She comes to us from Florida, where she has been working in a variety of roles with her order since entering religious life in 2020. Along with two other sisters from her order serving in other Birmingham-area parishes, she will be arriving in town in about two weeks. Our parish has a long history of women religious serving in pastoral roles, and it’s truly a joy to be able to carry along that tradition. Sister Amanda Magdalena will be joining us as a Pastoral Associate, with a special focus on developing and forming laypeople in ministry. She has a particular background in youth and campus ministries, and she is also bilingual. I think she’s going to be a great fit at our parish and make a tremendous difference in many lives! I look forward to us giving Sister Amanda Magdalena a proper welcome once she and the other sisters have had a chance to get settled. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Al comenzar nuestro Mes de Compromiso, tenemos la alegría de hacer algunos anuncios importantes durante las próximas semanas. Esta semana, voy a centrarme en uno de ellos en particular: un nuevo miembro de nuestro personal parroquial. Permítanme presentarles a Hermana Amanda Magdalena Davis, de las Siervas de los Corazones Traspasados de Jesús y María. Ella viene a nosotros desde Florida, donde ha estado trabajando en una variedad de roles con su orden desde que entró a la vida religiosa en 2020. Dear Brothers and Sisters, It’s always a bit dangerous to compare ourselves with other people. Sometimes, we look at how much more someone else is able to do, and we feel inadequate or unworthy. Or on the other hand, we think that we “measure up” favorably to someone else, and we can start to feel a sense of pride. This week’s Gospel parable pushes back against both of these tendencies. Jesus tells the story of a group of workers. Some of them started at the jobsite at the crack of dawn, while others weren’t hired until the very end of the day, but all of them received the same pay. It seems unfair to our human sensibilities, but on a spiritual level it makes perfect sense. Each of us is part of God’s work because he’s invited us to participate in it. And the common thread among all of us is that, no matter how early or how late we’ve come to be part of the Lord’s plan, we’ve all said “yes” to him. We’re going to be talking a lot about stewardship over the next month or so: the gifts of time, talent, and treasure that God has blessed us with and that we are called to give back to him. I think this parable is a good way to frame our reflection. We shouldn’t compare how much or how little we’re able to do with other people. If we all focus on responding “yes” when God calls us, we’ll all receive his abundant blessings. A reminder again about the Catholic Charities and Communities campaign that continues this week. This is an important fundraising effort that helps many people in our community: disaster relief, social services, and ministries that touch lives across our Diocese. Thank you for prayerfully considering being a part of this annual appeal from our bishop. If you haven’t received one in the mail, you’ll find pledge cards in the gathering space this weekend. Many thanks to everyone for your commitment to being faithful co-workers with the Lord Jesus. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Siempre es un poco peligroso compararnos con otras personas. A veces, nos fijamos en los grandes hechos de otras personas y nos sentimos inadecuados o indignos. O, por otro lado, pensamos que “estamos a la altura” de otra persona y podemos empezar a sentir orgullosos. La parábola del Evangelio de esta semana rechaza ambas tendencias. Jesús cuenta la historia de un grupo de trabajadores. Algunos de ellos comenzaron su trabajo al amanecer, mientras que otros no fueron contratados hasta el final del día, pero todos recibieron el mismo salario. Parece injusto para nuestra sensibilidad humana, pero al nivel espiritual tiene mucho sentido. Cada uno de nosotros es parte de la obra de Dios solo porque nos ha invitado a participar. Y importa cuán temprano o tarde hayamos llegado a ser parte del plan del Señor—la única cosa importante es que todos le hemos dicho “sí”. Hablaremos mucho sobre la mayordomía durante el próximo mes: los dones de tiempo, talento y tesoro que Dios nos ha dado y que estamos llamados a devolverle. Dear Brothers and Sisters, There’s a lot of energy in the air right now at St. Thomas! The Faith Formation program is back in full swing, and it’s been amazing to see a record enrollment this year. God has truly blessed our community, and I’m so grateful to be with the people of this parish in this time of growth. Our Scriptures this weekend speak about the Gospel value of generosity: how it opens our hearts to experience love and forgiveness more deeply. Although we’re not officially into our Stewardship Month of October, I would like to take the time this week to highlight one particular opportunity for generosity that’s very important to our Diocese: the Catholic Charities and Communities campaign. For those who are new to our area, or who are new to the Catholic Church, this drive is the annual appeal from our Bishop to support a number of important Catholic ministries and social services in our area. There are lots of national organizations out there with similar names, but this one is purely local. When you hear about our Diocese helping out victims of tornados or providing food to refugees, much of that funding comes through our Catholic Charities campaign. It’s an exceptionally worthwhile charity that makes a big difference for people right here in Alabama. You should be receiving a letter and pledge card about it from the Diocese this week, and I would encourage everyone to prayerfully consider being part of it this year. Last year, our parish raised over $56,000 for this campaign. Many thanks to everyone who took part. Your generosity continues to make a difference for so many people in need. We’ll talk about it at Mass next Sunday, as well, plus have pledge cards available for anyone who didn’t receive them in the mail. Also, a quick update on the special collection we took up in August to assist the seminarians of the Diocese: our parish raised a bit over $3,000. Our Diocese currently has 19 men in formation, and I’m so grateful that the good people of St. Thomas are committed to helping them through their years of preparation for the priesthood. Please continue to keep Andrew, John Paul, and all of our seminarians in your prayers. Thank you to everyone for the many ways that you look out for the needs of our parish, our Church, and our neighbors. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡Hay mucha energía en el aire ahora mismo en Santo Tomás! El programa de Formación de Fe está nuevamente en marcha y tenemos una inscripción récord este año. Dios realmente ha bendecido a nuestra comunidad y estoy muy agradecido de estar con la gente de Santo Tomás en este momento de crecimiento. Las Escrituras de este fin de semana hablan del valor evangélico de la generosidad: cómo abre nuestros corazones para experimentar el amor y el perdón más profundamente. Aunque no estamos oficialmente en nuestro Mes de la Corresponsabilidad en octubre, quisiera tomar el tiempo esta semana para resaltar una oportunidad particular de generosidad que es muy importante para nuestra Diócesis: la campaña de Caridades y Comunidades Católicas. Para aquellos que son nuevos en nuestra área, o que son nuevos en la Iglesia Católica, esta campaña es el llamado anual de nuestro Obispo para apoyar unas importantes ministerios católicos y servicios sociales en nuestra área. Hay muchas organizaciones con nombres similares, pero ésta es puramente local. Dear Brothers and Sisters, A warm welcome back to all of our Faith Formation students and teachers! It’s an exciting time, as we start to see the life and the learning that will be happening here over the course of the academic year. For our students, we’re very excited that you’re back for another year of learning about the faith and growing in your relationship with God. I’d really emphasize the idea of growing. Faith Formation isn’t a sort of school where you happen to be learning about God. It’s a time when you grow closer to Jesus by experiencing him in your teachers, in your friends, in the stories from the Bible, and in the Church’s teaching. Our whole parish is praying for you! For our teachers, I can’t say thank you enough. Your commitment to serve our community like you do is genuinely inspiring. Your dedicated work makes sure that we accomplish one of the most important things that happens at St. Thomas: passing on the Catholic faith to another generation. And for the whole parish, I’d encourage all of us to make a commitment to continuing our own “Faith Formation,” even if we don’t have a formal program on Sunday morning. In any journey, if we don’t keep moving forward, we lose precious time. My invitation would especially be to find a niche in our parish, if you don’t already have one, where you can take another step forward on your personal faith journey in the company of fellow parishioners. Just watch the bulletin, and you’ll see plenty of opportunities. Or if something else is on your heart, feel free to chat with me, and perhaps we can start something new! Let’s say a special prayer for our students and teachers as they begin Faith Formation. Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of the Church, and St. Thomas, the patron of those who seek to grow in faith, may we all open our hearts to be more deeply shaped by Christ in the coming year. Dear Brothers and Sisters, With Labor Day weekend, we’re moving out of the summer season and into the swing of fall. Things are moving again, both in the world around us and at St. Thomas! Our campus ministry is back in session, Faith Formation will begin next week, and the special seasonal events are coming soon. I’d especially mention All Saints’ Day (November the 1st, a holy day) and our Youth Fall Festival (on November the 5th). Before we jump into the busy season, however, we have the gift of a day of rest. Our secular calendar gives us Labor Day weekend, customarily Monday off. In the Church’s tradition, however, we see every Sunday as a time of rest. Or maybe to put it a bit more exactly, a time of freedom. Here’s the idea from Scripture. Our work on the other days of the week is when we share in God’s own work of making and sustaining—but the rest we enjoy each Sunday is a sign that we’re made for more than work. It’s a time when we don’t just use creation (through work) but instead enjoy creation, especially in our relationships. Part of why Sunday Mass is such an important hour of each week is precisely because it brings together our relationships with God and each other. And hopefully the holiday weekend will be a time to enjoy those relationships more fully, even for those who might have to work on Monday. I wish everyone a restful Labor Day weekend with your family, friends, and neighbors. Let’s rest from our labors, and look forward to the great work that God will do among us during the coming program year, under the powerful intercession of Blessed Mary, Ever-Virgin, and our patron St. Thomas. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Con el fin de semana del Labor Day (Día de los Trabajadores), estamos saliendo de la temporada de verano y entrando en el otoño. ¡Las cosas se están moviendo nuevamente, tanto en el mundo como en Santo Tomás! Nuestro ministerio universitario está en sesión, la Formación de Fe comenzará la próxima semana y muchos eventos especiales llegarán pronto. Menciono en particular la Fiesta de Todos Los Santos (1 de noviembre, un día de obligación) y el Festival de Otoño para nuestros jóvenes (5 de noviembre). Sin embargo, antes de entrar en esta temporada, tenemos el don de un día de descanso. El calendario secular nos da Labor Day. En la tradición de la Iglesia, vemos cada domingo como un tiempo de descanso. O tal vez para decirlo un poco más exactamente, un tiempo de libertad. Aquí está la idea de las Escrituras. Dear Brothers and Sisters, After our readings last week led us to reflect on the way God has brought all people together into his Kingdom, this week we hear the story of how Christ made sure those many peoples would be brought into the oneness of faith. When Peter recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus gives him the special ministry of leading the Church in unity. This passage has resonated loudly over the centuries. We hear those words of Jesus, and we can’t help but think of the many successors of St Peter who have had such an incredible impact on the history of our faith. As of 2023, there have been 265 of them, from St Linus through our own Pope Francis, and each of them has exercised this special ministry in ways that profoundly impact our faith. From speaking bold words of witness in times of controversy, to giving their life in witness to the Gospel in times of persecution, to exercising faithful stewardship of the Church in times of tranquility. The popes are a sign of hope and encouragement to us, as God’s pilgrim people. And yet we also know that being the Holy Father is an incredibly difficult job. There’s a reason why Pope Francis is always asking for our prayers, and why Catholics customarily add a prayer for his intention to the Rosary. At 86 years old, Pope Francis still going strong, leading the Church through our challenging times with tremendous energy and creativity. So many people have been drawn closer to God through his inspiring example, and he needs our prayers. As we reflect on the promises of Christ to Peter, let’s be sure to offer a special prayer for our good Pope this week. Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Apostles, and our patron St. Thomas, may Pope Francis continue to be an inspiring voice of God’s love and Christ’s unity, for the worldwide Church and for our parish. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, La semana pasada, las lecturas de las Escrituras nos llevaron a reflexionar sobre la forma en que Dios ha reunido a todas las personas en su Reino. Dear Brothers and Sisters, There are a lot of people out there who feel like they’re beyond the reach of God’s love. Sometimes because of decisions they’ve made, and sometimes because of difficult situations they’ve found themselves in. When we feel that way, life becomes a burden. And that’s why it’s so important for us to always remind ourselves and others that God loves everyone, no matter what we’ve done or what situation we’re in. That’s why Jesus died and rose again. He goes out of his way to make sure that we can all find our way to him and experience his loving care. We see it in today’s Gospel, when Jesus reaches out across every boundary of race and culture and society to show his love for a Canaanite woman and her family. Since we’re called to have the same attitude as Christ (in other words, to share his love), it’s worth thinking about whether there is anyone in our life that needs to hear that message of God’s love. Maybe they’re Catholic and have been away from church for a while. Or maybe they’ve never really known God. My encouragement to the parish this weekend is to pray for anyone you know who might be distant from God, so that they will feel drawn to his love. Inviting people to come closer to God is on my mind this week, since we’re in the process of starting our RCIA program for the year: the main way that we respond to the needs of people seeking unity with Christ and his Church. The formal program will begin the weekend after Labor Day, so we’re in active outreach mode right now. Again, as a first step, please think and pray about anyone you know that might be interested—I’m sure we all know someone that has questions and would like to learn more about God. As a second step, if you feel God leading you, please give them a personal invitation to come to St. Thomas and check out our RCIA. Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Apostles, and our patron St. Thomas, may we all find the wisdom and courage to bring someone in our lives to the Lord Jesus. God bless,

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Hay muchas personas que se sienten fuera del alcance del amor de Dios. Tal vez por decisiones que han tomado y por situaciones difíciles en las que se han encontrado. Cuando nos sentimos así, la vida es una carga y a veces insoportable. Y por eso es tan importante que siempre nos recordemos a nosotros mismos y a los demás que Dios ama a todos, sin importar lo que hayamos hecho o la situación donde nos encontremos. Por eso Jesús murió y resucitó. Él hace todo lo posible para asegurarse de que todos podamos encontrar nuestro camino hacia él y experimentar su amor. Lo vemos en el Evangelio de hoy, cuando Jesús cruza todos los límites de la raza, la cultura y la sociedad para mostrar su amor por una mujer cananea y su familia. Dear Brothers and Sisters, We’re coming to the home stretch of the summer! It never feels quite like things are fully back in swing until Labor Day, but schools already are back in session, and even the university will be starting out its academic year soon. But we still have one major summer celebration ahead of us: the Feast of the Assumption. This ancient feast day (dating back at least to the 400s) commemorates when Mary was taken into heaven at the end of her earthly life—a singular gift acknowledging her unique role in our salvation, as Jesus’ mother. In many countries, this feast day marks the last days of summer, when people’s minds start turning from the lighter schedule of summer to the work of the fall harvest. This feast is a Holy Day of Obligation. These are days when Catholics are normally expected to attend Mass on days other than Sunday, and they include: January the 1st (Mary, the Mother of God); November the 1st (All Saints); December the 8th (Immaculate Conception); and December the 25th (Christmas). Catholics come faithfully to Mass on these days, because they touch on major aspects of our salvation. As we observe this special feast in honor of the Blessed Mother, I invite to join us for this special day. We’ll have a Mass in English at 9am and a bilingual Mass at 7pm. These days of obligation are fundamentally days of opportunity: chances to praise God for his mighty deeds in the life of Mary. Through the intercession of Mary, our Lady of the Assumption, and of St. Thomas, our patron, may we recognize God’s loving presence in every season of our lives. God bless,

Office of the Bishop - July 17, 2023 My brothers and sisters in Christ, Grace and peace to you! I pray that you are experiencing an abundance of blessings this summer. It is my joy to share with you some good news and, at the same time, seek your help to partner with us to meet a financial challenge. This fall, the Diocese of Birmingham will be blessed to have 19 men in formation for the priesthood. Between 2025 and 2028, we will be on track to ordain 11 men to the priesthood for our diocese. These men are preparing themselves for priestly ministry in our diocese. Each has a unique vocational story that reflects the many ways our Lord calls them to consider ministry. Each one heard the clarion call of Jesus: “Follow me!” And they did! To meet the blessing the Lord has provided us presents a new challenge that will require a financial investment that will strain our current seminarian funds. The formation programs for our seminarians strengthen their relationship with Christ, deepen their love for the Church, and equip them to be effective missionary priests who love Christ. All in all, it is necessary for us to plan for a bright future of priestly ministry across our entire diocese. Think about how many more people can hear the Word of God proclaimed, how the visible signs of Christ through the sacraments touch those in need, and how each person can grow in discipleship and mission with Christ. At present, the greater share of funding for seminarian formation comes from the Seminarian Education Fund, formerly known as the Burse Club. Along with some assistance from grants and our annual Catholic Charities and Communities Appeal, the Seminarian Education Fund also receives gifts, bequests, and general donations from parishes and parishioners to augment the funding of seminarian formation. This fall, we will need to boost that fund even more than ever. After consultation with the Finance Office and the Presbyteral Council, I am authorizing a second collection in all our parishes to raise the additional funds for the Seminarian Education Fund. Therefore, I am urging parishes to take up this appeal to aid this Fund for this coming year on the weekend of August 5 - 6, 2023, the weekend closest to the feast of St. John Vianney (August 4), the patron of parish priests and co-patron of our diocese. Through this appeal, I invite you to partner with our seminarians. With your help, we can sustain the vitality of the Seminarian Education Fund for the future. Let us pray for the Lord of the Harvest to send workers into the vineyard, especially in Birmingham. May the harvest throughout the Diocese of Birmingham be abundant. As we reflect on our part in the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world, I’d like to pass along a prayer from Pope Francis, found in his 2013 letter titled “The Joy of the Gospel.” In it, he gives the Blessed Mother the title of “Star of the New Evangelization,” and he asks us to call upon her assistance in the great project of making sure every human being knows God’s love: Mary, Virgin and Mother, Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Dear Brothers and Sisters, In our Gospel readings throughout this summer and fall, we will be hearing many of Jesus’ parables. These are some of my favorite passages in all of Scripture, and even though they can be a bit confusing, I find that they always reward the time I spend thinking about them. To help us all grow in our ability to pray with these wonderful stories, let me pass along a couple tips to reading them effectively. There are two questions I always like to reflect on when praying with a parable: where is God? And where am I? Keep in mind that usually there will be more than one answer! For example, let’s take the parable of the mustard seed: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all plants, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” So where is the Lord? Most clearly, God is the gardener who plants the seed—the one who is responsible for making the Kingdom of Heaven quietly present in the unexpected nooks and crannies of our lives. But he’s also a lot like the full-grown tree: the support and inspiration we need to live our lives. Or you could imagine him as being the field: the place of safety that allows the projects we undertake in faith to grow and flourish. Can you think of anywhere else that God might be here? And where are we? I think many of us often feel like the mustard seed: very small, but able to trust in faith that God has great things planned for us. We’re also like the field: when we receive the seed of the Word of God, it grows and becomes the center of our lives. And sometimes we’re like the gardener, responsible for bringing the seed of God’s Word to other people. We’re also all over this parable! As we reflect on these parables as a community in the weeks and months to come, let’s make a point of becoming aware of the presence of the Kingdom of Heaven in every part of our lives, through the intercession of Blessed Mary, Ever-Virgin, and our patron St. Thomas. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, En nuestras lecturas del Evangelio durante este verano y otoño, escucharemos muchas de las parábolas de Jesús. Estos son algunos de mis pasajes favoritos de todas las Escrituras, y aunque pueden ser un poco complicados, siempre recompensan el tiempo que pasamos pensando en ellos. Dear Brothers and Sisters, What a wonderful summer it’s been at St. Thomas! We’ve had so many great times together over the past couple months, especially VBS and the Feast of St. Thomas, and I look forward to seeing the great things God has planned for us over the next year. During the summer, many families have the habit of taking a bit of vacation time. This is a great thing to do—and not just because it’s fun to relax. In the Old Testament, God commanded his people to take a day of rest each week, to spend with Him and with their families. He also commanded special times throughout the year when work should take a back seat to celebration and refreshment. In other words, God made it very clear that life is ultimately about relationships, not our bank accounts or job fulfillment. Even though the details of the old Law don’t apply to Christians, the principle of rest is important for us, too—Christ set us free, so that we could enjoy the things that truly matter. For those who are able to take some vacation this summer, I encourage you to enjoy some intentional time with God and your family. It’s especially important not to forget about the family prayers, even if we’re away from our usual routine! And for all of us, even those who can’t take a summer vacation, we should all a point of keeping our eyes on the things that truly matter in life: God, our families, and our community. Dear Brothers and Sisters, This weekend marks seven weeks that our summer seminarian, Andrew, has been with us, and he only has one more week to go. It’s been wonderful having him here with us, and although we’re sad to see him go, we also realize that he needs to get back to his formal studies. God willing, he’ll be ordained in another three years—and let’s be sure to offer plenty of prayers to get him there! Andrew’s time at the parish has given us an opportunity to reflect on vocations to the priesthood. As everyone’s aware, priests are a bit thin on the ground these days, and our diocese very much needs more. Where will they come from? It’s very simple: the priests we need will come from our families and our communities. God is always calling men to this special vocation—the only question is whether or not we help our brothers hear and answer that call. So with that in mind, I’d first of all encourage us to pray. Not only generically for “more vocations,” but specifically for God to smooth the way for the men he’s calling. And secondly, let’s all make a point of encouraging anyone we think God is calling to the priesthood. If you know a young man that you think would make a great priest, tell him so! Through the intercession of Blessed Mary, Ever-Virgin, and our patron St. Thomas, may God richly bless Andrew, John Paul, the seminarians of our diocese, and all the men whom the Lord is calling to this important vocation. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today, on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, we give thanks to God for his many blessings to our parish: for the blessing of the wonderful heritage of faith we share; for the gift of so many children in our midst; for the many new parishioners that continue to join us; and for the Lord’s on-going protection and guidance. We’re truly in a blessed and exciting time here at St. Thomas. Our parish is growing—most obviously in numbers, but equally importantly in depth of discipleship. There’s a certain energy in the air that you can feel, whenever we gather for Mass or learning or service or fellowship, that’s very special. God is telling an amazing story here in Montevallo, Alabaster, and Calera, and it’s truly exciting to be witness to the Holy Spirit doing great things. With all that said, we’ve got our work cut out for us as a parish. To cooperate with God, we’re going to need to be willing to step out on faith with him: as individuals, as families, as small groups, and as an entire community. For myself, I’ve had plenty of surprises in prayer and discernment of God’s will for the parish over the past two years, and I firmly believe that the task before us is for all of us to get ready to be amazed all over again by God’s plans for us. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Last weekend’s Gospel challenged us all to be good co-workers with God in his fields. “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” This week, I’d like to take the chance to talk about one of the most important areas of the work of evangelization: passing on our faith to the next generation. I think we often just think of passing on the faith as something that happens naturally in our families. And although families obviously are the most important piece of the puzzle, evangelization doesn’t just happen the way that an apple falls out of a tree. It’s an effort: explaining things that we ourselves may take for granted; modeling Gospel behaviors and attitudes that we ourselves need to grow in; and recognizing the unique way that God speaks to every human heart. In fact, teaching the Catholic faith to each generation is a lot like evangelizing a new culture. There are good things that need to be celebrated and built on. There are challenges that need to be addressed. And we ourselves have to be creative in engaging with each generation of kids: finding new ways to speak the old stories of the Catholic tradition. That creativity is something that’s very much on my mind this week as we begin Vacation Bible School. I’ve been amazed by all the talent and love and energy that our volunteers are bringing, and I look forward to a wonderful week of seeing God at work, as we teach our young parishioners what it means to love Jesus as part of our Catholic family. Before I close, I’ll add yet another word of invitation to any families who will be in town but who haven’t yet signed up! Things get going at 9am on Monday, continuing throughout the week. I’m looking forward to seeing a great turn-out. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, El Evangelio del fin de semana pasado nos desafió a ser buenos colaboradores con Dios en sus campos. “La cosecha es abundante, pero los trabajadores son pocos”. Esta semana, quisiera aprovechar la oportunidad para hablar sobre una de las áreas más importantes del trabajo de evangelización: transmitir nuestra fe a la próxima generación. Creo que a menudo pensamos en transmitir la fe como algo que sucede naturalmente en nuestras familias. Y aunque las familias obviamente son el lugar más importante en este campo, la evangelización no sucede de la misma manera que una manzana cae de un árbol. Es siempre un esfuerzo: explicar cosas que nosotros mismos podemos dar por sentadas; modelar conductas y actitudes evangélicas en las que nosotros mismos necesitamos crecer; y reconocer la forma especial en que Dios habla a cada corazón humano. De hecho, enseñar la fe católica a cada generación es muy similar a evangelizar una nueva cultura. Hay cosas buenas que necesitan ser celebradas y construidas. Hay desafíos que deben abordarse. Y nosotros mismos tenemos que ser creativos al relacionarnos con cada generación de niños: encontrar nuevas formas de hablar de las viejas historias de nuestra tradición. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this weekend’s Gospel, we hear a very famous statement from Jesus: “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” He says this in response to seeing the spiritual hunger of the crowds who followed him hoping to experience God. And his words remain very true to today. Often, when we talk about this quote, it’s in the context of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. But the reality is that there are far more needs in this world than the members of the clergy could ever meet. Even Jesus himself had collaborators in ministry! Not just the apostles, but also many ordinary folks—average men and women who opened their hearts to what God was doing. With that in mind, I’d like to make a request of the parishioners of St. Thomas. The harvest is so plentiful in our area: there are many people who need God, so many people who would experience him powerfully at our parish. But the laborers are few—just us! So here’s the idea. Let’s see if every single person at our parish can invite someone to Mass at some point this summer. Maybe someone who’s been away from church for a long time, or maybe someone who’s never been at all. A family member, a friend, or just someone you see at the store every now and again. If you’ve never tried inviting someone before, it can be a bit intimidating, but really, there’s nothing to worry about. Consider mentioning one of the special events coming up, such as Vacation Bible School week (June 26th through 30th) and our parish picnic on July 2nd (12pm to 3pm). Or just a simple invitation to a regular Sunday Mass. We’ve got such a friendly community that any visitors will feel very welcome! The harvest is truly plentiful! Aided by the intercession of Our Lady and our patron St. Thomas, let’s all make a point of being the co-workers that Jesus prayed for. God Bless,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We come this weekend to the great annual celebration of Corpus Christ: the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of our Lord. The same Body and Blood given for us on the Cross is forever present for the Church in the sacrament of the Eucharist! This particular Sunday marks a notable milestone in our parish: it was exactly one year ago that we first went back to having the chalice available for the entire community at Sunday Mass. What a journey we’ve been on with that! Stops and starts, challenges with getting the right balance of ministers and wine at each Mass, and the interplay between prudence and the rightful desire of everyone to be able to commune under both species. It’s amazing how far we’ve come, and I’m grateful to God for his watchful care and to the people of St. Thomas for your flexibility and patience. It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned the pandemic in this letter, and honestly, it’s a relief for me that it’s no longer something that always has to be in the forefront of our mind. I remember wondering three years ago how long it would be until it was just normal to see the community gathered for Mass, more or less the way things had been before. It was really hard to imagine at the time. As we celebrate Corpus Christi this year, one of the graces that gives me the greatest happiness is that we’ve returned to a sense of normality in the parish. At least for me, the last few years have been a lesson in exactly why Eucharistic devotion developed into its modern form (as in our procession and devotions at 9:30am on Sunday!) during the Middle Ages, a time of tremendous plagues and pestilence. The ability to gather as Christ’s Body (the Church) to receive Christ’s Body (in the Eucharist) is something that rightly inspires joy in the people of God, particularly when we no longer take it for granted. As we celebrate this special feast day, let’s enjoy the chance we have to come together each week for the great sacrament of love, to share in the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus with our parish family. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Summer is here, but things aren’t slowing down here at St. Thomas! God is always at work in our community, and there are some wonderful things going on over the next couple months in our parish. I thought I’d take a chance to talk about them a bit this weekend. First, with our seminarian Andrew here for the summer, he’ll be giving a series of talks on Sunday mornings (specifically, June 4th, 18th, and 25th, plus July 2nd) on prayer and holiness. They will be held in the Adult Faith Formation room (next to the music room) at 9:30am. Come on out and hear what he’s got prepared—I know I’m excited! Second, we’ll be holding a solemn observance of Corpus Christi next weekend (June 11), with devotions (including Adoration and a Eucharistic procession) at 9:30am, beginning in the main church. As best as I can tell, it’s been a long time since there’s been a Eucharistic procession here, so please come and see what all the shouting is about! These are truly wonderful times of grace. Third, as you’ve probably guessed from hearing the announcements and seeing the “spaceship” in our gathering space, Vacation Bible School is coming up: June 26 to 30. We have plenty of room, and we can also use more volunteers! Even if the young people in your family are teenagers now, they’re still invited to be involved as volunteers. And finally, to celebrate a great year here at the parish and to ask God’s blessing upon our community, we will be once again be honoring our patron saint, St. Thomas, on the Sunday closest to his feast day. This year, that will fall on July the 2nd. To help us observe the occasion as a community, we’ll also be having a parish picnic that day, after the 11am and 12:30pm Masses. The Knights will be grilling out, and everyone is invited to bring a side dish or desert to share. Mark your calendars! Many blessings as we enter the summer season. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We come this weekend to the Feast of Pentecost, the conclusion of the Easter season. Or maybe to put it a bit better, the fulfillment of the Easter season, when the mystery of Jesus’ Resurrection changed the lives and hearts of the disciples. With their experience of the sacraments of the first Easter, they received the Holy Spirit, and they began to preach Christ to the world. I think we’re at a similar point of transition here at St. Thomas in 2023. We’ve been celebrating the new presence of Jesus’ Cross and Resurrection to so many people in so many ways for the past couple months: about 100 disciples confirmed, and about 120 young people receiving First Holy Communion. Not to mention many baptisms (about 85 in the past year!), and the People of God gathering each week to continue experiencing what Christ has done for us. And now we come to the end of Easter. Before we head out into the long, green season—Ordinary Time, the time of the Church and the time of our mission—we gather to be renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. I’d ask you to join me in praying for his power and guidance for our parish over the coming months: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. Enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth. Amen! God Bless,

To all of those who have received the Lord for the first time this year: congratulations, friends! In addition, we welcome our summer seminarian. I’ll let him introduce himself! God bless, Fr. Jantz My name is Andrew Vickery, and I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Birmingham – which means that I am studying to be priest for our diocese. I grew up just north of Atlanta in Roswell, Georgia. I was baptized and largely grew up in the Methodist Church, and in 2013 my mom, brother, and I were received into the Catholic Church. After high school I began studying civil engineering at the University of Alabama. Civil engineering was a passion of mine for a long time, and it was with great joy that I graduated in 2020—though the Lord had plans for me that were different from practicing engineering. After graduating Alabama, I entered seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio where this spring I finished my third of six years of formation. By entering seminary, I was responding to several small promptings of God over a number of years. These promptings took the form of what I would call small tugs on my heart and little thoughts about the priesthood that would not go away. I would like to encourage any of my fellow young people here to seriously consider what the Lord might be calling you to and to not be afraid of taking a next step in following Him – following Him who never deceives us and always has our best interest in mind. This summer I have been assigned to your parish and I look forward to getting to know y’all, working with y’all, and learning from y’all. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Easter truly is the season of sacraments! This Sunday and next, we have the joy of celebrating with many of our families as their children receive their First Holy Communion. And in particular, we offer our prayers and congratulations to our students. Well done, friends! We’re very excited that you’ve come to this moment when you receive the Lord for the first time, and we look forward to the amazing things God will do in your lives. Of course, a moment like this doesn’t come without the help of many people. We are especially grateful to the parents of the First Communion students. In receiving the Lord in the Eucharist, these children are joined more closely to Christ and to all of us. The time and effort you have put in to make this moment happen have been a gift both to your children, who receive the gift of Christ’s Body, and to our community, to whom they are now more closely united in Christ. I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work that our Faith Formation teachers have put in to make this special moment happen. With First Communion being a 2-year preparation program, y’all put in a lot of extra work and creativity to make the program welcoming and meaningful. Thank you for your gift to the children in our parish. As we see many of our students receive their First Holy Communion, we are renewed today as a community in our faith in the Eucharistic Lord. Strengthened by the intercession of Mary, the Mother of the Eucharist, and St. Thomas, our parish patron, let’s give thanks for the priceless gift of Jesus’ Body and Blood, that we have the privilege of receiving each week. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, One of the things we’re always trying to get better at here at the Church is communication. The message of Christ is so important, and every human being needs to hear it, so we look for all the ways that we can to communicate that message. And in day-to-day situations, communication is what keeps us all working together for the glory of God, making sure that everyone is aware of ways they can worship and serve. With that in mind, I’d like to mention three particular areas of communication that our parish is working to grow in. First, if you haven’t visited our website lately, we’ve recently rolled out a big update, to hopefully make everything easier to navigate. Come and give us a look at stthomascatholic.com (our easy to remember address). And if you have any ideas or notice something missing, please let us know so that we can continue to make this a better resource for everyone. Also, I’d like to put in a plug for our parish’s YouTube channel. You can access it from the front page of our website, or look it up directly on YouTube. The main thing we have there is recordings of each Sunday Mass, for those who would like to join us virtually. I’ll also have the entire homily series we’ve been doing on the Creed available for your reference. The material is pretty deep, so you might find it helpful to listen again. Finally, in the area of communication, this weekend is our early registration for next year’s Faith Formation. If you have young people in your family who will be participating, it will be very helpful to get them signed up during this time, so we can be sure we will have enough classrooms and teachers for everyone next year. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The 4th Sunday of Easter is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday—for reasons that make perfect sense when you glance at the Gospel for today! Our readings give us the Lord’s reflection on his identity as the Good Shepherd of his flock. We’re continuing our reflection on the Apostles’ Creed this week by considering the difference that our belief in Jesus makes. He’s the one who guides and leads us! In more recent times, the church has also marked this Sunday as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Speaking from my own experience, I’d make two recommendations about how to promote this way of life that serves Christ’s flock. First, in prayer, ask the Lord to give the men he’s calling the graces needed to hear his calling and follow. It’s never been an easy path, and you’d be surprised by how many obstacles often come in the way of follow- ing this call. Second, when talking with the young men in your life, be sure to express the idea and im- portance of the priesthood every now and again. The shortage of priests isn’t from a lack of people that God is calling, but a lack of an ability to hear that call and a shortage of social resources that make following it a joy. Hearing from other people—parents, relatives, men- tors, and friends—that they’re supported makes it much easier to follow. Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, and our patron St. Thomas, may each of us be strengthened in our life’s vocation this week, and may our young people hear God’s call to the path he has chosen for them. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the ancient church, the Easter season was considered a time of “mystagogy:” going deeper into the mysteries of our redemption. In those days, the catechumens heard the Creed and saw the celebration of the Eucharist for the first time after they were baptized at the Easter Vigil. Then everyone would reflect more deeply on those central truths of the faith in the weeks after Easter, seeing them anew through the eyes of the recently initiated. With that in mind, I’d like to mention a few things going on in the parish that can help us make this season a time of mystagogy for us, as well. First, for the next few weeks, I’m planning to preach on the basics of the Apostles’ Creed. I hope this will be helpful to anyone new to our parish, and maybe it will be a good refresher for all of us to look at the basics. If you’d like to go a bit deeper at home, I’m reading a book by Scott Hahn right now that you might enjoy called The Creed: Professing the Faith through the Ages. Second, we’re coming to the end of the Faith Formation year, which means that it is almost time to register for next year. For families with kids of the appropriate ages (kindergarten through 8th grade, plus high school Confirmation), please be on the look-out for early registration information. It will be held the first weekend of May, and we will also open online registration at the same time. Let’s make sure that the youngest members of our community have a chance to go deeper! Third, as you make your summer plans, be sure to circle the week of June 26–30, which will be our Vacation Bible School. We’re looking to make it open to more ages this year (more details soon!), but I’m very excited about it. This is always a great moment for people across our parish to come together and give our young people a great experience of God’s love. I look forward to seeing you there!
