To the Parishioners of St. Thomas,

On July 10th, a bus left St. Thomas with 29 high schoolers and 13 chaperones in route to Atlanta, Georgia for a jam-packed weekend of fun, praise and worship, and maybe too little sleep. Steubenville ATL was a 3-day Catholic youth conference sponsored by the Franciscan University at Steubenville and Life Teen. At this conference, 3,000 teens gathered to share in the presence of God learning through his teachings and be unapologetically Catholic.

The theme of this year’s conference was “You Are Worthy.” It is a simple phrase, yet it carries a powerful message that every young person needs to hear. Our world constantly tells us that our worth depends on what we own or how successful we appear. Society measures value by the phone we carry, the car we drive, the clothes we wear, the number of followers we have on Instagram or TikTok, or the achievements we can display to others. Young people especially are surrounded by messages that tell them they must earn acceptance and prove that they are enough.

But God has already won the battle and declared our Worthiness by the cross, but the hard question we have to answer is when you doubt your worthiness do you put those fears at the foot of the cross and give them to the Lord. David say to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:47, reminds each one of us, “The Battle Belongs to the Lord.”

There are two highlights of the weekend that truly stand out. The first being that this year our youth received a direct message from the Holy See, Pope Leo himself. The teens were entranced. It’s one thing to have your parents or your priest or even your diocese support you on a weekend like this one. But it is a whole other level of cool when the leader of our universal church tells you that he is praying specifically for you. The second, and always the highlight of the trip, is Eucharistic Adoration. The atmosphere in the room was unlike anything words can fully describe. For three hours, more than 3,000 young people had their eyes fixed on one person and one person alone, Jesus Christ truly present in the Holy Eucharist. Seen below was a picture captured by our chaperones during adoration and it perfectly illustrates the intentions of every person in the room. No faces, only hands reaching out to Jesus. You can feel the longing from the photo for every person to be in perfect communion with God. What a gift!

We hope that this letter can serve as just a small token of our gratitude for the support given for this trip, especially the support of your prayers and financial assistance to make this weekend possible. The spirit is truly alive and moving in this holy place and in these young people. May each one of you be filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit and be aided in any of the Goliaths you face in your life.

A los feligreses de Santo Tomás,

El 10 de julio, un autobús salió de Santo Tomás con 29 estudiantes de preparatoria y 13 acompañantes rumbo a Atlanta, Georgia, para un fin de semana lleno de diversión, alabanza, adoración y quizás con muy pocas horas de sueño. Steubenville ATL fue una conferencia juvenil católica de tres días patrocinadas por la Universidad Franciscana de Steubenville y Life Teen. En esta conferencia, 3,000 jóvenes se reunieron para compartir la presencia de Dios, aprender de sus enseñanzas y vivir su fe católica sin reservas.

El tema de la conferencia de este año fue “Tú eres digno”. Es una frase sencilla, pero transmite un mensaje poderoso que todo joven necesita escuchar. Nuestro mundo constantemente nos dice que nuestro valor depende de lo que poseemos o de cuán exitosos parecemos ser. La sociedad mide el valor por el teléfono que llevamos, el automóvil que conducimos, la ropa que usamos, la cantidad de seguidores que tenemos en Instagram o TikTok y los logros que podemos mostrar a los demás. Los jóvenes, en particular, están rodeados de mensajes que les dicen que deben ganarse la aceptación y demostrar que son suficientes.

Pero Dios ya ganó la batalla y declaró nuestra dignidad por medio de la cruz. Sin embargo, la pregunta difícil que debemos responder es: cuando dudas de tu valor, ¿pones esos temores al pie de la cruz y se los entregas al Señor? David le dice a Goliat en 1 Samuel 17:47, recordándonos a cada uno de nosotros, “La batalla es del Señor.”

Hay dos momentos destacados el fin de semana que realmente sobresalen. El primero es que este año nuestros jóvenes recibieron un mensaje directo de la Santa Sede, del propio Papa León. Los adolescentes quedaron fascinados. Una cosa es contar con el apoyo de tus padres, de tu sacerdote o incluso de tu diócesis durante un fin de semana como este. Pero es algo completamente distinto cuando el líder de nuestra Iglesia universal te dice que está orando específicamente por ti. El segundo momento, y siempre el punto culminante del viaje, fue la Adoración Eucarística. El ambiente en la sala era algo que las palabras difícilmente pueden describir. Durante tres horas, más de 3,000 jóvenes tuvieron sus ojos fijos en una sola persona: Jesucristo, verdaderamente presente en la Sagrada Eucaristía. A continuación se muestra una fotografía captada por nuestros acompañantes durante la adoración, y esta ilustra perfectamente las intenciones de cada persona presente. No se ven rostros, solo manos extendidas hacia Jesús. En la imagen se puede sentir el anhelo de cada persona de estar en perfecta comunión con Dios. ¡Qué regalo tan maravilloso!

Esperamos que esta carta sirva como un pequeño símbolo de nuestra gratitud por el apoyo brindado para este viaje, especialmente por sus oraciones y su ayuda económica, que hicieron posible este fin de semana. El Espíritu está verdaderamente vivo y actuando en este santo lugar y en estos jóvenes. Que cada uno de ustedes sea llenado con el fuego del Espíritu Santo y reciban ayuda para enfrentar cualquier Goliat que se presente en sus vidas.
